A London record store owner in his mid-thirties girlfriend, Laura, has just left him. At the record shop — named Championship Vinyl — Rob and his employees Dick and Barry spend their free moments discussing mix-tapeaesthetics and constructing "top-five" lists of anything that demonstrates their knowledge of music.
Rob, recalling his five most memorable breakups, sets about getting in touch with the former girlfriends. Eventually, Rob's re-examination of his failed relationships and the death of Laura's father bring the two back together. Their relationship is cemented by the launch of a new purposefulness to Rob's life in the revival of his disc jockey career.

I remember this as a movie, with John Cusack. VERY retrospective. I picture this as a chicken scratch kind of handwriting font with an OBVIOUS nervousness about it with hesitant strokes. What are you planning to do with it? Possibly more retrospective style to it? A call back to the 80s or 90s styles? It's set in the 90s yes?
ReplyDeleteLoved this movie! Did not know it was a book though, definitely going to read it. Your characteristics listed for Rob are spot on. I think the typeface needs to have the disc jokey element in there, since it's such a part of the characters identity. Maybe somehow manipulating music imagery of headphones, records & record players to reflect Rob's emotions since that seemed to be his outlet.
ReplyDeleteThe DIY aesthetic of the record store (stickers, posters, mixtapes) is awesome and a great source of inspiration. The ex-girlfriends and list making are things that make the narrative personal and therefore relatable. The communal aspect of music should be illustrated in the type, so when people see the type, subconsciously they feel connected like the shared interest in a band.
ReplyDeleteI would look into typefaces that are inspired by records and that retro feel. I think it could be really fun
